FRANCO GRIGNANI (PIEVE PORTO MORONE, 1908 - MILANO, 1999)

The creative story of Grignani spans almost the entire twentieth century, touching on different disciplinary fields and bringing in each a contribution of innovation. Tireless experimenter of expressive languages and technical procedures, painter, photographer, graphic designer and designer, Grignani is the creator of an enormous number of works and projects, some of which have become part of the visual landscape of contemporaneity: an example is the creation of the Woolmark, or the international certification mark of Pure Virgin Wool, to be considered, due to its sophisticated graphic processing, a small work of art that everyone has, sooner or later, worn. The dynamism implicit in this and numerous other images of the artist has its roots in his participation, during the thirties, in the experience of the Second Futurism. His research in the field of experimental photography began in the same decade, leading his work to align itself with the most advanced aspects of the international avant-garde and to investigate, in a more and more specific way, the phenomenology of perception. The study of the relationships between the eye and the mind, the deepening of the psychology of form, have the natural result of his approach, in the sixties, to the current of Optical Art. If Grignani's works in this field have what premises geometry and science, formal results are distinguished by the fluidity of their virtual movement, often generated by tangles of black and white lines. Among the ingenious labyrinths and visual mirages devised by the artist, it may happen to feel, as in the case of Psychoplastic n.442, the echo of Escher's inventions.
